이길래 작가는 지난 30여 년간 소나무 형태를 중심으로 자연의 생명력과 생성 원리에 대해 탐구하며 자연의 형상을 빚어왔다. 작가는 동파이프를 얇게 잘라 만든 타원형 고리를 연결해 자연에 대한 경외심을 그만의 독창적인 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

작가는 자연에서 영감을 받으며 한국인의 정신을 표상하는 소나무를 주요 모티프로 삼아 작업 세계를 심화해 왔다. 소나무의 형상은 점차 뿌리와 껍질, 나이테 등 나무의 부분적인 형태로 집중되거나 무생물인 돌과 바위의 형상으로 변주되며 작업으로 확장되었다. '천년 소나무(Millennium Pine Tree)' 연작은 수백, 수천 개의 동파이프 단면을 용접해 완성한 작품으로, 인공적인 소재를 통해 역설적으로 자연의 생명력과 힘을 표현하며 정밀한 조형과 오랜 시간의 노동을 드러낸다. 작가는 소나무의 실체를 은유하며 우리가 상상하지 못한 자연의 형상을 제시하고, 한 폭의 수묵화를 보는 듯한 인상을 통해 동양적인 미감을 자아낸다.

작가는 오랜 시간 사유를 통해 소나무의 형상으로 자연의 원초적 생명력을 드러내며 영원히 '죽지 않는 소나무'를 펼쳐내고 있다. 미술비평가 로르 마르탱은 그를 "자연을 빚는 자"로 칭하며, “작가는 시각적·개념적 은유를 통해 인간과 자연 간의 대화라는 주제를 상징적으로 탐구한다"고 평했다.

For more than 30 years, Lee Gil-rae has explored the vitality and generative principles of nature through the form of the pine tree. By connecting thousands of oval rings cut from copper pipes, he creates sculptures that express a deep respect for nature through his own distinctive visual language.

Inspired by nature, Lee has developed his artistic practice around the pine tree, a symbol of the Korean spirit. Over time, his work has expanded beyond the tree itself to focus on its roots, bark, and growth rings, while also transforming into the forms of stones and rocks. His Millennium Pine Tree series is created by welding together hundreds and sometimes thousands of cross-sections of copper pipes. Using this industrial material, he paradoxically expresses the vitality and strength of nature, while revealing remarkable craftsmanship and years of dedicated labor. Through the pine tree, Lee presents forms of nature beyond our imagination, and his relief sculptures often evoke the feeling of traditional ink paintings, creating a distinctly East Asian sense of beauty.

Through decades of reflection, Lee has continued to express the fundamental vitality of nature through the image of the pine tree, creating what he calls an "everlasting pine tree." Art critic Laure Martin described him as "the sculptor of nature," writing that "through visual and conceptual metaphors, Lee symbolically explores the dialogue between humanity and nature."
