Why are Choonjae Kim’s landscapes more special and unique? He graduated from Hongik University Department of Oriental Painting and works with a Western medium, oil painting. He combines Western materials with compositions and techniques commonly used in Oriental painting. This unique combination of East and West generates his own formative language. In oriental paintings, strokes are said to contain spirit. The landscapes created by the artist’s brush strokes clearly reveal his hard work and efforts.
The works in his <Tiny wood> series, which began in 2021, show a strong combination of or contrast between darkness and light. While Choonjae Kim’s landscapes are dark, such darkness cannot be simply seen as one-sided darkness. In Eastern philosophy, blank space is another way to express the content. The artist wishes to show us what is hidden in the landscape through “black space.” Darkness emphasizes the scenery and even interrupts the entire story of the work. Silence can be an answer, and that silence embodies the artist’s complex emotions and contemplation of reality in the midst of the life in modern society.
Choonjae Kim says that landscape does not refer to a specific place. However, it is not a landscape of ideas or imagination, either. It is a result of the skillfully harmonized opposites of “reality” and “symbol.” The landscapes created by the artist generate a new formative world. In other words, reality is a landscape of life internalized through nature. He captures his inner peace through beautiful landscapes, and his landscapes are intertwined with the landscapes in our memories and expand beyond the canvas. Therefore, Choonjae Kim’s works are lively open spaces, rather than heavy, closed spaces.
